Ayesha Bollywood Funk NYC Dance School and Company was built on the creative vision of Ayesha Khanna. Her journey as a dancer began at the ripe of four. Born and raised in India, she learned the classical dance form of Kathak under the guidance of Pundit Birju Maharaj and Smt. Shovana Narayan. A natural performer, she also studied acting under Amal Allana, the Chairperson of the National School of Drama in New Delhi.

An alumni of Danceworx Performing Arts Academy in New Delhi, she performed in a variety of shows and Bollywood films across India. Over the past 16 years, Ayesha has choreographed and performed in over 100 productions, most notably Bollywood mega hit films "Dhoom" and "Socha Na Tha”. Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Ballet quickly became a part of her dance repertoire, and soon, Ayesha harnessed these vibrant energies with her classical training and inspiration from the exotic world of Bollywood to create her own unique style.

In 2005, Ayesha moved to the Big Apple to realize her big city dreams. Within a year of her arrival in the USA, she was training at the Broadway Dance Center and performing on the Alvin Ailey stage. In the epicenter of the dance world, she had access to a variety of different styles of dance, experimenting with new genres every day.

A true labor of love, Bollywood Funk started in her living room in 2007 with no funds, and just one student, soon growing to over 20. With years of blood, sweat and tears, she created the Bollywood Funk that exists today, which has seen thousands of students walk through its doors, serving up Bollywood with an edge marrying all of the dance styles she had been exposed to over the years.

Very quickly she established herself as a desired choreographer and trainer, collaborating in a variety of projects from “So You Think You Can Dance”, American Academy of Ballet, Governors Ball and Madison Square Garden halftime shows. Ayesha has had the fortune to work with established achievers in different areas with a remarkable roster consisting of stunning songstress Tina Sugandh, Olympic gold medalists Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov, as well as Miss India USA contestants. Her choreographies have been presented at the Prestigious Fred Astaire Awards, Engendered Film Festival, Diwali at Times Square, with the luminaries of the Broadway and Bollywood world in attendance.

Ayesha has always thrived on the dance floor, noticing that she shined the brightest and gained newfound perspective on her life and goals while dancing. Bollywood Funk was born out of a desire to design a program that would both enrich and challenge people, as well as comfort and welcome them. It is with pure love and dedication that she has created a shared space for her students to improve themselves and get through difficult times, by virtue of dance.

What is it about choreography and dance that excites Ayesha most? "Bollywood dance allows you to experience and express every side of yourself. I love to see my choreography come to life in my students and watch it bring out their innermost self when they dance. For those few moments nothing exists besides themselves, the music and the movement.”
